Lip filler augmentation has become more popular than ever, thanks to celebrities such as Kylie Jenner plumping their pouts and flaunting them on social media. Although lip fillers are not a permanent cosmetic procedure, it is still crucial to seek advice from a medical professional before going through with the process, as you should with any cosmetic treatment.
So, as experienced and medically-trained aesthetic doctors and nurses, we’re here to provide you with five things to consider before getting lip fillers. It’s important to note that you should make this decision for yourself and only go through with the treatment if it is something that would make you happy or improve your well-being. Remember, we’re here for you and can provide you with as much information as possible. Still, ultimately, the choice is yours, so you must consider the questions to ask yourself beforehand to decide whether it’s the best option.
Keep It Natural
One of the main aims of lip augmentation is to achieve the most natural-looking result possible. We have treated countless patients over the years, and many have the same fear of getting “duck lips” or their results looking unnatural and plastic. To avoid this, we always recommend starting with a small amount of dermal filler, allowing the area to heal, and then assessing whether injecting more would be appropriate for your desired look.
We also use hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane, as hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body to keep the skin plump and hydrated. By using these products, we aim to ensure that your lips not only look natural but feel soft and natural after the procedure as well.
Lip Fillers Are Temporary
It’s important to know that lip fillers don’t achieve permanent results. Although the results can vary between people and the type of product used, our lip fillers usually last around six to twelve months before needing a top-up to keep up with the desired look or size.
This has advantages, as your look can be altered and amended over time to suit any change in preferences – a factor that makes lip fillers desirable to many as there is no long-term commitment, unlike cosmetic surgeries. However, people often don’t realise that it can take time to achieve the final lip enhancement look they want, so you shouldn’t always expect results to be achieved overnight. Like all our dermal fillers in Jersey and our other locations, lip fillers can be given gradually during a period of different appointments until the desired look is achieved.
Immediate Results
As previously mentioned, although your desired look is not likely to happen immediately after your initial session, you will no doubt see a difference in the shape of your lips soon after the first procedure. Please note that it is completely normal to see some swelling and, in some cases, bruising straight after your appointment; you should also see the immediate effects and benefit from your new plump pout.
Healing time differs from person to person, although you should be able to see the effects soon after the procedure. Your practitioner will provide essential aftercare advice and contact details post treatment, so you can rest assured you will always be in safe hands.
Preparation Is Key
In order to get your desired results, preparing before your appointment is vital. At least a week prior to your procedure, avoid any medication that causes blood thinning, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or great amounts of vitamin E supplements, to minimise bruising and swelling.
If you are at risk of bruising, it is also recommended that you take arnica tablets several days before the procedure as these can significantly help to fight the bruising.
Downtime is Minimal
If you are concerned that you may have to take long periods off work after the procedure, this is certainly not the case. Lip fillers require minimal downtime, enabling you to return to your regular routine soon after the procedure. However, avoiding consuming alcohol and doing any strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours is recommended to give the products time to settle and the swelling to calm down.
It is also advised that if you have any plans or special occasions coming up, then it’s best to book an appointment one to two weeks before your event takes place, just to ensure that you are 100% healed and ready to show off your new pout.
