Hair loss can be embarrassing and humiliating, particularly in younger people. There are many reasons that can cause a person to lose their hair, ranging from medical conditions, to allergic reactions, and even due to psychological problems. Today, we’ll focus on just one of these causes of hair loss – Trichotillomania.
What is Trichotillomania?
It is a compulsion to pull out hair, most typically from the scalp, but some people will pull hair from other parts of the body too. It is often associated with dermatillomania, which is the compulsion to pick at skin.
Who does it affect?
It can affect anybody regardless of race, gender or age, but it commonly makes its first appearance in pre-pubescent children and teenagers. For some young people, it can last for a short time, but for others it lasts well into adulthood, and sometimes for the rest of their lives. It tends to affect more women than men, with adult women being diagnosed with Trichotillomania twice as often as adult men.
What are the effects?
‘Trich’ can have huge consequences for those suffering with it. There are physical, emotional and social effects that can make life difficult for people with this condition. Repeatedly pulling hair out can lead to infections and permanent hair loss, as well as anxiety and feelings of shame. Many sufferers will avoid leaving the house if they’ve had a particularly bad episode, as it can cause unsightly bald patches.
Is there a cure?
The short answer is ‘no’; there is no cure for Trich. However, there are possible treatments, such as psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This attempts to break the habit and stop the compulsion for sufferers, although, for some people, they have already caused permanent damage.
