Knowing your skin type is absolutely necessary to make the right decision regarding a skin care or treatment, and which is suitable for your particular skin needs.
A skin’s quality or type is genetically determined, however, the health and beauty of your skin later in life can largely depend on the foods you eat and how well you care for it.
In order to give your skin the best possible care; the first step is to determine your skin type so that you can match it with the best methods to improve your look and slow the aging process.
So, if you’re not sure which skin type you are – here are the five basics, and how to determine the care it needs to stay healthy and natural!
Tip: To determine your type, wipe your face in the morning with a clean facial tissue when you wake up.
Normal Skin
A normal skin type means that the tissue will not reveal any traces of oil, and skin of this type should feel elastic, soft, supple and vibrant.
If you’re of a normal skin type, lucky you! As normal skin is the least problematic type, even with minimum care, skin should look clean, smooth and have a good circulation and healthy complexion.
Dry Skin
If your skin is dry, the facial tissue will be clean, too, but skin will feel flaky, dry, and tight after you have wiped it.
Dry skin can easily develop a sallow tone, slight wrinkles and fine pores, and is easily prone to irritation and early-aging. Of course, the younger you are, the healthier it will look, but in order to keep skin healthy – apply thorough care and regularly apply moisture to the skin through tested beauty treatments and moisturisers.
Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, the paper will have spots of facial oil on it, especially in relation to the nose, cheek and forehead areas. Oily skin can be problematic, and tends to look greasy, coarse, and shiny with enlarged pores. Oily skin can quite often be prone to acne breakouts, although lacks signs of aging or wrinkles.
Careful cleaning, minimizing of carbohydrate consumption and avoiding rich creams can often improve the quality of oily skin.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is usually very dry, and may feel tight at the touch. Sensitive skin also becomes inflamed or irritated easily, developing reddish and scaly areas, which are often itchy and prone to spot breakouts. Sensitive skin is possibly the most fragile skin type, and requires a very special type of care.
Contact a professional in order to research the most appropriate treatments to suit sensitive skin.
Combination Skin
Combination skin is the most common skin type throughout women, and if you are of combination type – the tissue will have traces of oil coming from your nose and forehead, but will be clear around the cheek area. Combination skin will also have patches of both dry and oily skin, and requires various types of care in relation to particular facial and body areas.
As combination skin is prone to ‘dry zones’, which are usually located on the cheeks and around the eyes, these areas should be treated with rich creams, while oily areas (usually on the forehead and nose areas) will improve through a frequent and thorough cleaning regime.
